With 25 billion chickens in the world, they outnumber any other bird species. The chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus, is a domesticated subspecies of the red junglefowl, a member of the pheasant family native to Asia. Genetic studies have found that the grey junglefowl also contributed to the chicken’s evolution. Chickens are also the closest living relatives of the great Tyrannosaurus rex.
