Everybody loves a quartz crystal (including us), so when you add some extra cool on top of an already cool crystal, you get cactus quartz. Not sure if that makes perfect sense, but it’s kind of like adding nacho cheese on top of your fries. It was great before, but now it’s even better.
Cactus quartz not only looks cool, the way it forms is pretty neat too. It happens when a quartz crystal gets covered by a second generation of smaller crystals that grow on the faces of the main prism. These tiny crystals point outward, and their orientation isn’t related to the central crystal’s crystallographic alignment. Often, the tips of the first-generation crystals are still exposed. This unique growth pattern gives cactus quartz its distinctive look, and it’s also known as spirit quartz or pineapple quartz.
It’s basically the crystal version of: “Yo dawg, I heard you liked quartz crystals, so I put quartz crystals on your quartz crystals.”
Another cool thing is that cactus quartz is found only in South Africa, mainly in the Magaliesberg Mountains, which makes it geographically unique compared to most quartz varieties.
