Fossilized Woolly Rhino Tooth Specimen B
Even the wildest imagination of a prehistoric rhino wouldn’t fully capture the sheer magnificence of the woolly rhino. With its towering horn crowning its head and its massive stature, this ancient beast was both awe-inspiring and breathtaking.
The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was a gigantic Ice Age mammal that roamed the cold steppes of Europe and northern Asia. Closely related to modern rhinos, it was covered in thick fur to endure the harsh Pleistocene climate. Its large body, short legs, and forward-slanting horns likely served purposes ranging from defense to competition and even clearing snow to access vegetation.
To sustain its massive size and endure the frigid conditions, the woolly rhino required a substantial diet—and a powerful set of teeth to match. Woolly rhino teeth are a first for us, and we’re thrilled to have them in our collection.
