Metasequoia Redwood Leaf Fossil

Roughly 63 - 2 million years old

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a genus that dates all the way back to the age of dinosaur it is related to the California Redwoods and was thought to be extinct until living specimens were discovered in central China in 1944. First called a “fossil tree” because it was believed extinct but to the surprise of many, it was not. Today, the fast growing tree is used for ornamental purposes and it is (and was) a very pretty tree. It grows in a pyramidal shape and can reach a height of 120 feet. Considering how big this tree gets, it is kind of head scratching that we thought it was extinct. To be fair, their fossils definitely give that impression.

These unique specimens may include one, two or even three sprigs depending on the specimen.

All Paxton Gate specimens are guaranteed to be of the highest quality; sourced from ethical vendors and private collectors around the world.
